State Treasurer Stenberg Announces NEST, Nebraska’s 529 College Savings Plan, ‘Draw Your Dreams’ Art Exhibit

Lincoln, NE (February 13, 2012) – An architect, a marine biologist, a basketball player. These are three examples of careers students pictured themselves in when they entered the NEST (Nebraska Educational Savings Trust) Draw Your Dreams Scholarship contest last year.

To celebrate the artistic talents of these Nebraska students, State Treasurer Don Stenberg will host an exhibit in the Nebraska State Capitol, first floor Rotunda, February 27 to March 2. NEST Program Manager, First National Bank of Omaha, will host the exhibit in its Tower Wintergarden, 1601 Dodge Street, in Omaha, March 19 to March 23.

The scholarship contest ran September 1 through October 3, 2011. It was open to children ages 7 to 13. Contestants were required to draw and submit pictures of what they dream of becoming when they grow up.

Twelve contest winners each received a $3,500 scholarship and 12 runners-up each received a $750 scholarship, all of which were invested in NEST Direct 529 College Savings Plan accounts. The Nebraska Art Teachers Association selected the 12 winners and 12 runners-up from more than 230 entries. The winners’ art also was featured in the 2012 NEST Calendar.

Treasurer Stenberg encouraged parents, families, friends, and members of the community to visit the Capitol to view the students’ artwork and celebrate the students’ artistic talents. “The students’ artwork reflects the diversity of opportunities in Nebraska and the students’ desire to be the best they can be in whatever fields they choose,” Treasurer Stenberg said. “The future is bright for Nebraska’s young people, and our college savings plans will help these students realize their dreams.”
